The KPJ International Specialist Hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia will provide high quality medical care in luxury accommodation.
Nightingale Associates has unveiled plans for a luxury private hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The 400 bed Specialist Hospital, for KPJ Healthcare Berhad, will provide a range of one-stop ‘Centres of Excellence’ catering for both local and international patients. The distinctive design is inspired by the concept of “the healing hand” and was developed by the design team comprising of Nightingale Associates and locally based Healthcare Technical Services and M&R Architects.
Last year Nightingale Associates, in association with Malaysian practice M&R Architects, won an international design competition held by leading private healthcare provider, KPJ Healthcare Berhad. Nightingale Associates was appointed as lead architects and M&R Architects will execute the detailed design. The hospital will be developed using international standards, however local considerations will also be reflected in the proposal.
KPJ Healthcare’s aspiration for the hospital is an innovative departure from all the other hospitals in Malaysia that have preceded it, not only in the quality of its clinical services, but also in terms of its hospital planning and architectural design. The new hospital is intended to provide high quality health services to both domestic and international clients.
Nightingale has developed a design concept that is in plan based on the symbolic “healing hand”. The curved “palm” of the hand accommodates a central atrium and a “hot core” which comprises clinical and non-clinical departments that support the whole hospital; this includes central imaging, endoscopy, pharmacy, theatres, intensive care, emergency, restaurant and teaching facilities. The six Centres of Excellence namely - oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, general and elderly medicine, cosmetic and reconstructive, and woman and children, form “fingers” that protrude through the glazed atrium wall. These have curved end facades, and a wave-like roof concealing plant areas.
